What is this?
Essentially, this is a terminal window implemented in AJAX. Instead of using
a program like a telnet client or a Java applet to access a terminal-based
application, you can use this web page. The application, in this case, is the
old BBS door game Legend of the Red Dragon. The application is actually running
on the Linux web server in an emulated DOS session using DOSEMU.
Why do you have to log in?
To play a BBS door game, the program has to know who you are. In a real
BBS, that was accomplished using a "drop file", which was a file
containing information about the user placed in a certain directory. When
you first access the game here, the back-end creates the drop file containing
your user id before it launches the program.
Can multiple people play at the same time?
Not all door games supported multiple simultaneous players, but Legend of
the Red Dragon did. It is currently configured to allow 10 people to play
at once, but that limit can be increased if needed.
Why did I make this?
Once upon a time (1997), I actually made money selling In-Game-Modules (IGMs) for
Legend of the Red Dragon. One day it just occurred to me that I could
probably hook up old door games to a web interface using AJAX technology
and decided to try it. My real job is not nearly so much fun.
